Nickerson State Park camping is the classic Cape Cod campground trip, minus the sand dunes. The park sits on more than 1,900 acres in Brewster, Massachusetts, and its 418 campsites are spread through pine and oak woods that slope down to clear freshwater kettle ponds. There are paved bike trails, pond beaches, yurts and group sites, and Cape Cod Bay is within biking distance. It is one of the busiest campgrounds in the state, so planning ahead matters more here than almost anywhere in New England.

This guide covers the Nickerson State Park campground areas, the campground map, yurts, reservations and fees, the ponds, the bike trails and what to check before you go.

The campground is split into numbered areas: Area 1, Area 2, Area 3, Area 4, Area 5, Area 6, Area 6x and Area 7. Every site has a picnic table and a fire ring. Comfort stations with hot showers and flush toilets are spread through all the areas.

  • No hookups: there are no electric hookups at any campsite, so "does Nickerson State Park have electric hookups?" has a short answer. RV and trailer campers can use the dump station.
  • Accessibility: accessible comfort stations are in Areas 1 to 5, though not every comfort station in those areas is accessible. Areas 6, 6x and 7 have none. All accessible campsites are near the accessible comfort station in Area 4.
  • Group camping: the park has group campsites for scouts and big family trips.
  • Site limits: four adults, or two adults and the children in their care. You can have two tents, or one tent and one trailer or RV, and two vehicles at most per site.

Best campsites at Nickerson State Park: the woods are similar across the park, so choose by what you want nearby. Pick a site close to a pond if you want a short walk to the water. Pick Area 4 if you need an accessible site. Pick a site near the bike path if you plan to ride. Area 4, Area 6 and Area 1 are the area names people search for most, and their site photos are worth comparing before you book.

Nickerson State Park Campground Map

The reservation site has an interactive Nickerson State Park campground map and campsite map, with photos of each site. Use it to check slope, shade and the walk to the nearest comfort station. The park also publishes a general Nickerson State Park map and a trail map. Download a map PDF before you arrive, because the campground is big and the roads loop through the woods.

Nickerson State Park Yurts

The Nickerson State Park yurts are canvas-sided, cabin-like structures that sleep 4 to 6 people. Each has bunk beds, chairs and a table, plus access to water and electricity. Know these points before you book a yurt at Nickerson State Park:

  • No heat. Yurts are not heated, so pack a warm sleeping bag in spring and fall.
  • Bring bedding and dishes. Linens and eating utensils are not provided.
  • Electricity is not reliable enough for medical equipment.
  • No pets in yurts.

If a yurt is your first step up from a tent, our what is glamping guide covers how yurts compare with other glamping options.

Nickerson State Park Camping Reservations

Reservations go through ReserveAmerica, the system Massachusetts DCR uses, so "Nickerson State Park ReserveAmerica" is the right place to book.

  • Reservations required: no walk-in camping is allowed.
  • Booking window: up to 4 months before arrival. Summer weekends book fast, so set a reminder for the day your dates open.
  • Fees: the reservation listing gives campsite fees of $22 a night for Massachusetts residents and $70 for non-residents. Non-residents also pay a $5 per night surcharge that goes to Nickerson. Every reservation carries a $4.50 non-refundable transaction charge. Fees change, so confirm the total at checkout.
  • Check-in and check-out: check in from 1 to 9 p.m. Check out by 11 a.m.
  • 14-day limit: between Memorial Day and Labor Day, you can stay up to 14 days total in any one park.
  • ID: the reservation must be in the name of a primary occupant aged 18 or older, and you need a photo ID at check-in.

Nickerson State Park cancellation policy: changes and cancellations cost $10. A cancellation on the day of arrival must be made by phone. You lose the first night's fee plus the $10. If you will arrive late, call the park. Sites are held until 8 a.m. the morning after your arrival date, and after that the reservation counts as a no-show with no refund.

Ponds, Swimming and Fishing

The park's ponds are glacial kettle ponds, formed more than 10,000 years ago as the glaciers retreated. No streams feed them, so their levels rise and fall with groundwater and rain. Cliff Pond is the largest. Flax Pond, Little Cliff Pond and Higgins Pond are the other big ones.

  • Swimming: you can swim and paddle at Flax Pond and Cliff Pond.
  • Boating: Big Cliff Pond allows engines up to 10 HP. Electric motors are allowed on Flax Pond and the other ponds. Bring your own kayak or canoe, or check for a rental on the Cape before your trip.
  • Fishing: the ponds are stocked with trout. Higgins Pond is catch-and-release. Anglers 15 and older need a Massachusetts freshwater fishing license.
  • Water advisories: cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) advisories are sometimes posted for Cliff Pond in warm weather. Check for current advisories before you swim, and keep dogs out of the water while one is in effect.

Nickerson State Park Bike Trails and Hiking

The Nickerson State Park bike trails are a big reason people come. There are about 8 miles of paved bicycle trails inside the park, and they connect to the 26-mile Cape Cod Rail Trail, so you can ride from your campsite to towns across the Lower Cape. The trails pass white pine and spruce stands, a cedar swamp and pond views. Hiking trails loop around the ponds, and some trails also allow horseback riding and cross-country skiing in winter.

Is Nickerson State Park Open?

The day-use park is open year round. The campground is seasonal. "When does Nickerson State Park open for camping?" depends on the year: the 2026 season opened April 16. Watch ReserveAmerica for the 2027 dates.

Short closures do happen. On February 26, 2026, the park closed for the day with the front gate shut for hazardous tree removal. The Friends of Nickerson State Park group posts updates like that, along with pond advisories. Check it, or call the park, before a day trip in the off-season.

Rules to Know Before You Go

  • Firewood: Massachusetts does not allow firewood to be brought into or out of any DCR campground, and no other wood products may be brought in. Breaking the rule can get you evicted. Buy firewood at the park. It is sold by credit card only, and the posted price is $7 a bundle. Our how to start a campfire guide covers the rest.
  • Alcohol: alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all Massachusetts state parks and campgrounds.
  • Pets: up to four pets per campsite, leashed at all times and never left unattended. Bring the rabies certificate, because it is checked at check-in. See our camping with dogs tips.

Tips for a Great Nickerson Trip

  • Bring bikes. It is the easiest way to get from your site to the ponds, the bay and the Rail Trail.
  • Pack for cool nights. Cape Cod evenings can be chilly in spring and fall, and the yurts have no heat. Our how to stay warm camping guide helps.
  • Plan for rain. Coastal showers roll in fast. Read camping in the rain and pitch your tent tight. Our how to set up a tent walk-through covers guylines.
  • Cook at camp. With a fire ring and a picnic table at every site, campfire cooking and a two-burner stove cover every meal.
  • Use a checklist. Our camping checklist keeps you from forgetting the basics.
