How to Choose a Tent
Learn how to pick the right tent for your camping style, group size, and conditions.
How to Choose a Tent
Choosing the right tent is one of the most important camping decisions. A good tent will keep you dry, comfortable, and protected from the elements.
Consider Your Group Size
Tent capacities are based on a tight fit. A "2-person" tent usually fits two people with minimal gear. For comfort, consider sizing up: a 3-person tent for two people gives room for gear and movement.
Season Ratings
- 3-season – Spring, summer, fall. Good ventilation, lightweight. Most campers need this.
- 4-season – Built for snow and wind. Heavier and less ventilated. Only needed for winter camping.
Key Features to Look For
- Vestibule – Covered area outside the main door for gear and wet items
- Waterproof rating – Look for a rainfly with at least 1500mm hydrostatic head
- Pole material – Aluminum is stronger and lighter than fiberglass
- Setup – Freestanding tents are easier to pitch and move
Where to Camp
Your choice also depends on where you'll camp. Car campgrounds allow heavier, roomier tents. Backpacking requires a lighter shelter you can carry for miles.
