Hamlin Beach camping puts you in a roughly 1,300-acre New York state park on the Lake Ontario shore, west of Rochester in Monroe County. The Hamlin Beach State Park campground has 264 tent and trailer sites in six loops, and the park adds about a mile of shoreline, sandy swimming beaches and a paved lakeside trail.

This guide covers the campground map, reservations, pet rules, the 2027 season and the swimming closures you should plan around. For more lakeside and oceanfront trips, see our beach camping guide.

  • Hours: daily, dawn to dusk.
  • Entrance fee: $9 per vehicle, collected 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It runs on weekends and holidays from mid-May, daily from June 18 through Labor Day, then on weekends and holidays through Columbus Day.

Is Hamlin Beach Open? Campground Dates

The campground is closed for the season. It ran May 15 to October 12 in 2026. The park itself stays open dawn to dusk, and the state's park page lists no other closures.

2027 dates: CampADK, an independent camping site, lists May 21 to October 10, 2027. We couldn't confirm those dates on the state's site, so check before you plan an opening weekend trip.

Sites and Hookups

CampADK reports that all 264 sites have electric service, with 178 at 30 amps and 86 at 50 amps. There are no water or sewer hookups. You fill up at shared spigots, and permanent attachments aren't allowed. A dump station, restrooms and showers are on site, and accessible comfort stations serve Loops A, B and C.

Sites are large and flat, and many are deep. CampADK lists 41 for trailers up to 30 feet and 223 for trailers up to 40 feet, with no pull-throughs.

Two things to know before you book:

  • No site is on the water. Reviews and listings can blur this, but you won't camp on the sand or have a lakefront pad. You'll walk or drive to the beach.
  • Expect less shade. Emerald ash borer damage led staff to remove many trees, so the canopy is more open than older photos show. Pack a canopy and sunscreen for July.

Hamlin Beach Campground Map

The campground map splits the sites into two halves, and the split matters if you have a dog.

  • Loops A, B and C (sites 1–137): pets allowed.
  • Loops D, E and F (sites 138–264): no pets.

The six-loop layout cuts down on through traffic. Find the map on the reservation listing, and look at a site's length and shape before you commit. CampADK also has thousands of Hamlin Beach State Park campsite photos, though site-level picks sit behind its paid membership.

Pet Rules

You can bring up to two pets on a leash no longer than 6 feet. Bring proof of rabies vaccination to check-in, because metal tags aren't accepted. Pets can't go in restrooms or buildings, on the beach or past C Loop.

Hamlin Beach Camping Reservations

Book through ReserveAmerica or at 1-800-456-2267.

  • Booking window: up to 9 months ahead, so July weekends open the previous October.
  • Release times: 8 a.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. on weekends from March 15 through Labor Day, and 9 a.m. the rest of the year.
  • Same-day bookings: accepted until 3 p.m. on arrival day.
  • One-night stays: generally only when you book within 3 days of arrival.
  • Check-in: 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the camping office, not the main visitor center. Check-out is 11 a.m.
  • Limits: 6 people per site, 2 tents or 1 camper and 1 tent, 2 vehicles and 14 nights in a row.

Prices: the state's pages don't list nightly rates, so check the total on ReserveAmerica for your dates. Walk-ins: the state park page says reservations only, while the booking listing mentions walk-ins, so don't count on one.

Swimming at Hamlin Beach: Closures to Plan Around

Swimming is allowed only where lifeguards are on duty. The 2026 season was tentatively June 20 through Labor Day, typically 11 a.m. to 6:45 p.m.

Beach closures are common here, and the park doesn't refund a stay because of them. In 2026, the Democrat and Chronicle reported Hamlin Beach closed for an E. coli exceedance in July, then all three swimming beaches closed for lack of lifeguards in late August.

Is Hamlin Beach open for swimming today? Call the park or check the state's beach results map. Swim Guide, updated by Lake Ontario Waterkeeper, also posts Hamlin Beach water quality results during the season. Book a trip for the campground and the shoreline as much as the swim, and have a backup plan for hot days.

Trails and Things to Do

The park has 6 miles of hiking and biking trails.

  • Shoreline Trail: a paved path running east to west along the lake, past the beaches.
  • Yanty Creek Nature Trail: a mile-long self-guided marsh loop at the eastern end, good for birding.
  • Devil's Nose: a sand bluff at the western end. Signs warn of a nearly 80-foot drop, so keep kids and dogs back from the edge.
  • CCC and POW camp trail: an interpretive trail near Moscow Road. Civilian Conservation Corps crews built much of the park's stonework, and German prisoners of war were held here from 1944 to 1946.

Boating and fishing: the park has a car-top boat launch and fishing. People search for a Hamlin Beach pier, but we couldn't find an official one. The park's jetties were added when the beaches were rebuilt after 1970s storm erosion.

Pavilions: five rent for $50 to $100 and hold 96 to 200 people. Shelter reservations open 11 months ahead.

Events: a Halloween-themed weekend runs on Columbus Day weekend, the last weekend of the season.

Winter: there's no camping, but you can snowshoe, cross-country ski and snowmobile.

Weather: Lake Ontario wind can change a beach day quickly. Check the forecast and the marine forecast for this stretch of shore, and stake your tent well.

Recommended Gear

  • Coleman Sundome Camping Tent: an easy, weatherproof pick for a breezy, open site. See how to set up a tent.
  • Helinox Chair One: light enough to carry from your site to the sand.
  • Black Diamond Spot 400-R Headlamp: for bathhouse trips and late walks back from sunset on the beach.

Use our camping checklist for the rest. The park asks campers not to move firewood, so buy it locally for your campfire.
