Green Lakes State Park camping puts you a few minutes from two of the strangest lakes in New York. Green Lake and Round Lake are glacial, meromictic lakes: their layers of water never fully mix in spring and fall, which is what gives them that milky blue-green color. Add the largest stand of old-growth forest in Central New York, a Robert Trent Jones golf course and a 144-unit campground, all about 15 minutes east of downtown Syracuse, and you have one of the easiest camping weekends in the state.

This guide covers the campground loops, hookups, cabins, prices, reservations and season dates, plus what to do once you're there.

  • Address: 7900 Green Lakes Road, Fayetteville, NY 13066. Park office: (315) 637-6111, open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
  • Operator: New York State Parks (OPRHP). Reservations go through ReserveAmerica or 1-800-456-2267.
  • Campground size: 144 bookable units: 133 campsites, 7 cabins and 4 reservable pavilions.
  • 2026 season: May 15 to October 11, 2026. ReserveAmerica lists the campground as open through the morning of October 12.
  • 2027 season: May 14 to October 10, 2027.

Green Lakes is a seasonal campground. If you're searching "Green Lakes State Park campground closed," that's the reason: camping ends in mid-October and doesn't return until mid-May. The park itself stays open year-round for day use, with trails open sunrise to sunset.

Campground Loops: Pinewoods and Rolling Hills

The campground is split into two areas, and they camp very differently.

  • Pinewoods (sites 1–72). This is the hookup loop. Select Pinewoods sites have 50-amp electric with full hookups, so this is where most RVs end up.
  • Rolling Hills (roughly sites 65–137). A mix of 30-amp electric sites and sites with no hookups. Most of the tent camping is here.

Most sites allow up to 6 people. Sites are fairly close together, which is the most common complaint in reviews, so look at the Green Lakes State Park campground map on ReserveAmerica and choose an end-of-row or edge site if privacy matters. The site detail pages list the amperage and hookups for each site, which is more reliable than any third-party listing.

Shared facilities include hot showers, a dump station, a playground and a small camp store open Friday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Firewood and ice are sold at the park office. Don't bring firewood from home, because New York restricts moving untreated firewood.

Green Lakes State Park Cabins

The 7 cabins are the quickest way to book a stay here without a tent.

  • Capacity: 4 people per cabin.
  • Age rule: you must be 21 or older to reserve and stay in a cabin.
  • Pets: allowed. Smoking: not allowed inside.
  • Price: $111.50 a night or $462 a week, with a 2-night minimum.
  • Peak season: from late June through the end of August, cabins rent only in 7- or 14-night blocks, Saturday to Saturday.

Because there are only seven, summer cabin weeks book up early. Shoulder-season weekends in May, September and early October are much easier to get.

Green Lakes State Park Prices and Fees

Here's what the park currently publishes for Green Lakes State Park prices:

  • Campsites: $20 to $39 per night, depending on the site and hookups.
  • Cabins: $111.50 per night or $462 per week.
  • Registration fee: $7.25 per reservation.
  • Non-New York residents pay an added surcharge.
  • Vehicle entrance: the park page currently lists no vehicle entrance fee. Day-use fees can change by season, so check the park page before a summer visit.

Camping Reservations: Rules to Know

  • Booking window: up to 9 months in advance.
  • Same-day booking: allowed until 3 p.m. on your arrival day.
  • Maximum stay: 14 nights in a row, then a 48-hour break before you can book again.
  • Pets: up to two per site, on a leash no longer than 6 feet, with current proof of rabies vaccination shown at check-in. For tips on making it work, see our guide to camping with dogs.
  • Late arrival: if you can't arrive on your reservation date, call the park office directly so they don't treat you as a no-show.

Things to Do at Green Lakes

  • Swimming: the sand beach on Green Lake is open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, when lifeguards are on duty. It's closed outside that window.
  • Boating: private boats, kayaks and canoes are not allowed. Rowboat and kayak rentals are available instead, which helps protect the lakes.
  • Fishing: allowed on Green Lake only, not Round Lake.
  • Hiking: there are about 15 miles of trails. The loop around Green Lake is the classic walk, and the Round Lake trail runs through the old-growth forest. The same trails are used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter.
  • Golf: an 18-hole course designed by Robert Trent Jones, plus a disc golf course.

October is a great time to visit. Fall color around the blue-green water makes the lake loops some of the best foliage walks near Syracuse, and the campground stays open until October 11.

Tips for Camping at Green Lakes

  1. Book Pinewoods for an RV and Rolling Hills for a tent. Check each site's hookup details before you book.
  2. Plan for cold nights in late season. Central New York nights drop into the 40s in May and October. Our guide to staying warm while camping covers layering and sleep systems.
  3. Pack for rain. Upstate weather changes fast, so set up with a rainfly and a tarp. See camping in the rain.
  4. Arrive early in summer. On hot weekends the beach and parking lots fill with day visitors from Syracuse, so set up camp before mid-morning.
  5. Combine it with the Finger Lakes. Green Lakes is a good first stop on a trip that continues southwest to Watkins Glen State Park camping, about two hours away by car.

Recommended Gear

  • Coleman Sundome Camping Tent: a reliable, weatherproof tent for the Rolling Hills tent sites. Its full rainfly handles upstate showers.
  • Teton Celsius Sleeping Bag: May and October nights at Green Lakes get cold, so a bag rated well below the forecast low makes shoulder-season trips comfortable.
  • Black Diamond Spot 400-R Rechargeable Headlamp: for walking to the showers after dark and for early-morning lake loops before the day crowds arrive.

Is Green Lakes State Park Camping Worth It?

Yes, especially for a first camping trip or a short break from Syracuse. The campground is close to the city, it has full hookups in Pinewoods and simple tent sites in Rolling Hills, and the lakes look like nothing else in the Northeast. Book early for summer, try a fall weekend before the October 11 closing, and if you want more of New York State Parks, the Finger Lakes are an easy drive south.
